Skyrim : Dawnguard Out Today

Before you get your hopes up (because that could realistically happen, right?), I will let you know that I actually don’t have much of anything to say today. More than a proper post, today is just kind of an announcement day. Dawnguard, the first expansion for Skyrim is out today for Xbox 360. It will be released at a later date, probably still this week, for PC and PS3.

The story of this expansion focuses around an ancient vampire clan and those hunting it. It includes new locations, equipment, and perks. There are two new perk trees; One for Vampire and one for Werewolf. You can become a vampire lord. Unfortunately, you can’t be both a werewolf and a vampire at the same time. Hopefully someone will fix that for PC with a mod very quickly so you can become the most badass thing ever: A rampaging werewolf that turns into a cloud of bats and flies away when threatened.

Soon I will have more to say about this expansion.

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Demo

There were several gaming-related topics that came to mind for this week. A couple of them I would have liked to cover but, in the interest of keeping current, they will have to wait.

It was announced a while back that a Mass Effect 3 multiplayer demo would be released on the 14th of this month. EA and Bioware kept their word this time around and delivered exactly that, right on schedule (more or less). It’s available on PC through EA’s Origin service, on 360 through Xbox Live, and on PS3 through PSN (at least I think so).

This demo is considered a pretty big deal because previous editions of Mass Effect didn’t have any multiplayer. It’s a new thing for 3 and it promises to bring a lot of new people to the franchise. People have been talking about ME3 multiplayer since before it was even officially announced. It isn’t often that RPGs have multiplayer at all but with the way this series blends third person shooter with RPG, it’s a perfect fit.

I have not yet gotten around to downloading, much less playing, the demo. So far, though, I have heard nothing but positive things from those who have. I look forward to the multiplayer aspect of the game since my girlfriend and I are both fans of the series. I’ll be buying the game either way, though.

WoW Down

World of Warcraft is down today during the entire time I would normally get a chance to play. They do this usually once a week. That’s bad enough but it’s made worse by the fact that you can’t count on it. It’s not always down on the same day and the time can sometimes shift.

This hasn’t been a problem with SWTOR. In general, I think Bioware and EA just have their shit together a lot more than Blizzard. The tradeoff, I guess, is that EA does evil giant corporation things (like launch day DLC out the ass) whereas Blizzard, while they’re running a solid business, does seem to be operated by a bunch of geeks that actually like what they’re doing.

Still, I get annoyed when I want to log into WoW and find out that the realms are all down. Sometimes there is only a couple of hours of warning. Other times, when you’re lucky, you get a full 24 hours. It used to be every Tuesday…last week it was Wednesday.

Special SWTOR Title

I learned last night, via an e-mail, that people that have signed up for SWTOR and paid for a month before early March will be getting a special title for all of their characters. The title is ‘Founder’.

Update on SWTOR Guild

My SWTOR guild, Red Lantern Corps on Crucible Pits, is coming along nicely. When I last logged off there was around 30 members.

In an effort to get more people to join, I have started a contest. I have given everyone the ability to invite new people. I have put in our daily message that whenever they recruit a new member, the should send a message to my main to let me know. The person who recruits the most by January 1st gets 1,000 credits and a promotion.

WoW is Addicting

Playing World of Warcraft with my girlfriend yesterday reminded me of how addicting it can be. Really it’s the economy in the game that really hooks me.

However, the actual gameplay of SWTOR is much better.

Today, my girlfriend is asleep when I get home so I will be back at SWTOR. I’ll be playing on Crucible Pits with some member of Red Lantern Corps, probably.

Still Playing SWTOR, Back to WoW

I haven’t even tried to log into SWTOR for the last couple of days because I have no patience for waiting in a long line to play. It’s still a great game, though. I do plan to continue playing it.

My getting back into an MMORPG got my girlfriend to start playing WoW again. I’ve decided that I will play with her, while not quitting SWTOR. I’m signing up for the deal that will get me Diablo 3 for free.

Star Wars The Old Republic Releases Today

Today is the official release date of Bioware’s Star Wars The Old Republic. Of course, anyone that preordered has been able to play for at least a day by now.

If you like Star Wars, get this game. If you like MMORPGs, get this game. If you like Bioware RPGs, get this game. I’m really enjoying it so far.

Early Access The Old Republic

A few days ago, I got the e-mail granting me early access to Star Wars The Old Republic. For anyone not yet aware, this is the new Star Wars MMORPG made by Bioware. It fully releases tomorrow, December 20th.

I’m not going to give my complete thoughts on the game just yet since I’ve barely scracted the surface of the game’s content. What I will say is that the mechanics are very similar to most other MMORPGs. However, each class has a unique storyline that plays just like a Bioware single player RPG.

I’m really enjoying the game so far. At this time, my main is on Crucible Pits. It’s a Sith Warrior (Marauder) Zabrak that looks more like Darth Maul than I would like. The character’s name is Atrocitus and I have already formed a guild called Red Lantern Corps.

My Second Skyrim Character

For my second Skyrim character, I decided to go pure mage. I focused exclusively on Destruction at first, as far as spells were concerned. After a while I started using a lot of Alteration while dabbling in a little bit of everything else. All the while, I was using Enchanting and Alchemy as heavily as possible.

I used Smithing whenever I happened to have materials that I could make use of but it wasn’t anything I was really working at intentionally.

I had a lot of fun early on doing the mage thing but after a while, I just didn’t enjoy it as much. Things got difficult because I could get hurt or killed too easily, even while using Stoneskin with the perk that makes it more effective.

I think I’m going to be done with that character now, at least for the time being.
