Skyrim : Dawnguard Out Today

Before you get your hopes up (because that could realistically happen, right?), I will let you know that I actually don’t have much of anything to say today. More than a proper post, today is just kind of an announcement day. Dawnguard, the first expansion for Skyrim is out today for Xbox 360. It will be released at a later date, probably still this week, for PC and PS3.

The story of this expansion focuses around an ancient vampire clan and those hunting it. It includes new locations, equipment, and perks. There are two new perk trees; One for Vampire and one for Werewolf. You can become a vampire lord. Unfortunately, you can’t be both a werewolf and a vampire at the same time. Hopefully someone will fix that for PC with a mod very quickly so you can become the most badass thing ever: A rampaging werewolf that turns into a cloud of bats and flies away when threatened.

Soon I will have more to say about this expansion.

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Demo

There were several gaming-related topics that came to mind for this week. A couple of them I would have liked to cover but, in the interest of keeping current, they will have to wait.

It was announced a while back that a Mass Effect 3 multiplayer demo would be released on the 14th of this month. EA and Bioware kept their word this time around and delivered exactly that, right on schedule (more or less). It’s available on PC through EA’s Origin service, on 360 through Xbox Live, and on PS3 through PSN (at least I think so).

This demo is considered a pretty big deal because previous editions of Mass Effect didn’t have any multiplayer. It’s a new thing for 3 and it promises to bring a lot of new people to the franchise. People have been talking about ME3 multiplayer since before it was even officially announced. It isn’t often that RPGs have multiplayer at all but with the way this series blends third person shooter with RPG, it’s a perfect fit.

I have not yet gotten around to downloading, much less playing, the demo. So far, though, I have heard nothing but positive things from those who have. I look forward to the multiplayer aspect of the game since my girlfriend and I are both fans of the series. I’ll be buying the game either way, though.

Fight for the Light is Here!

I don’t think I’ve talked about it here before but I play a game called DC Universe Online. It’s a massively multiplayer online action game set in the DC Comics universe. It’s not the greatest game ever but it is fun. It’s created and run by Sony Online Entertainment. That’s the company that made Everquest and ruined the lives of people with no drive or self control, long before World of Warcraft was even an idea. They know what they’re doing…kind of. Well, most of the time….I think. Anyway, since it’s a Sony company, that means that it is not only on PC but also on PS3. That’s one of the main reasons I got it, actually. I like DC, I like huge games (which is something MMOGs deliver), and I wanted to have something other than MAG that I would ever play on my PS3. That thing has been little more than a Bluray player since I got it.

The game, referred to hereafter as DCUO, came out late last year or early this year. I think it was supposed to have come out last year but got pushed back, just like everything else these days. I looked at it when it came out but there was no demo or trial of any kind. I also learned that you were unable to play a Green Lantern or anything really at all like a Green Lantern. It seemed kind of cool, anyway, but I decided it wasn’t worth the risk at the time.

Many months later, I learned that they were doing an expansion to add in what should have been in the game all along: More Green Lantern stuff and hard light powers. There was to be some epic quest line where you fight alongside the Green Lantern Corps or the Sinestro Corps, depending on which side you play. That announcement, back in early July, got me to buy the game. The hadn’t given a release date other than “late summer” but I figured that would give me time to learn the game.

Learning the game was easy. I really enjoy it while I’m playing it but it just doesn’t suck me back in. That’s probably a good thing. I didn’t play a lot but it was good when I did. Now I joined at a time when the game was going through some trouble. There were bugs in their payment system, servers were dead, glitches in the game, whatever. Then they combined all the severs for each platform and they were all overcrowded. It was really a mess for a while. It got better, though.

Now, I had just been thinking of canceling my membership until the Fight for the Light DLC came out. I enjoyed the game but I wanted to be a Green Lantern, damnit!

Well, when I woke up last night and checked Facebook, I discovered that the DLC had been released. I played it a good chunk of the night and I am really loving the new power set. Hard light is much cooler than the couple of others I have tried. If you decide to check this game out, either on PC or PS3, I really suggest you play hard light. You’ll probably have to pay $10 for the DLC but it’s worth it. Current subscribers when it was released (at least on PS3) got the DLC for free because of the hassle we went through recently. Fuck yeah, free!

And there you have it, my most meandering post yet and one that I’m sure no one will care about. I still plan to write about the new DC comics when I get them and my copy of the last issue of Flashpoint (where the change happens) and the new Justice League should be showing up any day now. See you then, if not sooner.
