An Introduction to My Madness (I)

Since I am returning from a long while away from this blog, I feel that I should reintroduce myself to any potential new readers, even if they just happen by while browsing. For any old readers, or people reading that actually know me, this will serve more as an update on my current interests.

My name is David. On the internet, I’m usually known as Ninja D! or TheNinjaD. Rarely, it’s Istirith or Black Jack Davey. I may still even have some accounts that I no longer use under the names The Lost One or Davidknght. I live in Mankato, Minnesota. I love this city and it is pretty much the hub of south central Minnesota in every way. I’m 24 years old and I work overnights at a truck stop.

Something that seems to be the biggest development in the eyes of many is that I have started drinking. Alcohol, that is. I have always been strongly opposed to the stuff in the past. I guess you could say I gave in to its temptation in a time of weakness. After a series of disappointments, let downs, and otherwise unfortunate happenings, it felt like my life sucked for a little while. That’s when I started. I’m better now, more or less. However, since I can’t really say I don’t drink at all now, I’m not as inclined to avoid it. I’ve actually come to like the taste of UV apple vodka. Rumple Minze isn’t bad, either, and much stronger. Go figure. What hasn’t changed is what I think of alcohol. It’s still stupid because it is, in fact, poison. You really shouldn’t drink it. It’s a bad idea. Also, if you’re drunk out in public, you’re still an asshole. Do it at home and don’t bother anyone. An exception to this is bars because people working there signed up to deal with that shit.

My interests are still primarily music, comic books, video games, and just a whole lot of generally pretty geeky (but no less awesome for that) stuff. I’ve been working a bit more seriously on music than I had been for quite a while and watching a lot more TV shows and movies. I’ve also recently come to like suits and think I just might be wearing them often from now on.

Music. Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of local music from the past and present. Among these are Old Towne Ghosts, Professor Fresh, !ntell!gent Des!gn, Discount Brown (no longer together), Phedge (no longer together), Collabo (no longer together), and probably a number of others that I’m forgetting at the moment. I’ve also been listening to a lot of (hed)PE again. As for what I’ve been working on, that’s mostly still with the project called Behavior Modification Therapy and we’ve actually been making some progress.

Comics. I’m still reading most DC titles, along with the big ones from Top Cow, and a few others. I really need to cut back on what I’m ordering and I’ve been doing that gradually. I’ve also only been ordering comics every other week instead of weekly and I guess that’s probably saving me a bit in shipping costs. I am, of course, still ordering from Midtown Comics. The Green Lantern and Batman books are mostly my favorites but there is a lot of good stuff out there. Probably a bit too much for me to go into right now.

TV and Movies. I am sometimes a Netflix junkie. Lately, I’ve mostly been watching How I Met Your Mother. Before that, I watched all that I could of Louie and Archer. I’m still gradually working my way through Star Trek, little chunks at a time. This week I watched the movie Trollhunter, which was excellent and easy the best found footage movie I have ever seen. The last couple of movies that I saw in theaters were Prometheus and The Avengers, both of which were quite good.

Video Games. I canceled my subscription to SWTOR because I just don’t feel like I have the time to dedicate to it. I’m still bound to WoW for a number of moths yet because of the Annual Pass that I signed up for. If anyone would like to play that with me, I would be very interested. I feel bad that I’m paying for it and haven’t even logged in for so long. I’ve played some Diablo 3, Skyrim, and Mass Effect 3 but I’ve mostly been hooked on Minecraft again, both on PC and Xbox 360.

And there you have it. I think that’s more than enough of a summary for now. I hope you’ll read beyond this point where things may actually become more interesting.

New Comic Day 02/15/2012

It’s new comic day again.

DC titles on my list for the week :

Batman #6 — I really like what Scott Snyder has been doing with the Council of Owls. It’s got to reach a climax soon and it should be interesting.

Birds of Prey #6 — While not really among my favorites of the new 52, I have thus far considered Birds of Prey to be worth ordering every month. Last month things got a bit strange so I’m sure to keep reading for at least a little while longer.

Captain Atom #6 — Again, not the best but worth reading. I’m surprised that this book made it through DC’s first round of cuts. I haven’t heard any great reviews for it or anything so maybe it will be in the second. I like it well enough, anyway.

DC Universe Presents #6 — The first story of this anthology series, which starred Deadman, ended last month. This month starts a new story featuring the Challengers of the Unknown.

Green Lantern Corps #6 — While I’m unlikely to ever not read a Green Lantern title as long as I’m reading comics, this one has annoyed me a little by messing with established canon more than any of the others. That always happens, though.

My Greatest Adventure #5 — I’m pretty sure that this limited series is nearing its end so if you haven’t read it before now, don’t bother trying to get into it. I’ve liked it quite a bit, though, and would suggest picking up the trade for something a little different.

Nightwing #6 — Solid book so far and part of the Batman group.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #6 — Easily the weakest Batman group book that I keep getting. It’s silly with bits of ignorance. It’s capable of offending. It’s also pretty damn amusing at times.

Other Comics :

Witchblade #153 — I’m still following the new Top Cow universe, for now. Darkness #151 marks that title joining the new universe with Artifacts and Witchblade.

Dark Tower Gunslinger Way Station #3 — It’s Dark Tower, enough said.

Mis-Adventures of Adam West #1 — I’ve got to check this out. What the hell could be in store for the world here?

…and that’s it. This week also sees the release of more infection tie-ins but I haven’t read the first one at this point and I don’t feel like going all out on a big event right now.

Watchmen Prequels

Yesterday, DC made public their plans to release seven prequel comics to the classic The Watchmen. This was met with very mixed reactions and, as everyone should have expected, Alan Moore is not at all happy. I can’t say I blame him and I understand how he feels, even if I don’t agree with him.

You can find full details, along with links to several newspaper articles online, on the DC blog (The Source).

I would kind of like to read these but I’m not so sure that I would feel right about supporting them with my money. What do you think, secret readers?

New Comic Day 02/01/2012

It’s new comic day once again.

DC is keeping pretty solid to the same schedule every month now, which is nice. Of course, the first month saw Red Lanterns come out in week two or three but that is now the regular week one GL title. That’s out this week.

The Batman group books that are out this week are Batwing and Detective Comics. Batwing is clearly reaching a climax of the first arc. Batman is also featured as an important character in Justice League International, which is also out today.

This week we also get Action Comics, which has been good so far but seemed to suddenly start telling a different story last month. I’m fine with a retelling of the origin story but that should be an arc of its own, not dropped in the middle of one I’m currently enjoying.

Hawk and Dove, another great new 52 title, comes out this week. I think last month was sort of the end of the first arc but it wasn’t any sort of clear-cut finale. If you ask me, there’s a little too much emo nonsense with Dove but that happens sometimes.

Finally, Green Arrow is out this week. It hasn’t been terrible so far but every month I’m on the fence about ordering it again. This may be the last issue unless it really impresses me. That’s it for my DC titles.

This week I will also be picking up Warriors of Mars #1 and Star Wars : Dawn of the Jedi #0, both mostly out of curiosity.

New Comic Day 01/25/2012

It’s new comic day again! The fourth week of the month means new Green Lantern The New Guardians!

If you buy your comics at a shop, take a loot around while you’re there. Buy a comic you haven’t read before that looks cool. Try something that comes from a company other than Marvel or DC. Bonus points if it’s from a publisher even smaller than Image and if it’s original IP! No comics look good? Most shops sell games and can use your support.

New Comic Day 01/18/2012

It’s new comic day yet again. Week three of the month always brings us a new Green Lantern Corps. This month there should be more coming on the Keepers.

Leviathan Strikes!

I just finished reading Batman Incorporated : Leviathan Strikes! While it only just came out, it seems to be out of continuity with the current DCU. It has the old Batgirl as Batgirl as well as Barbara Gordon as Oracle. If I had been aware of that, I would have been less interested. To make things worse, it’s actually just a continuation of the Batman Incorporated. If you haven’t read that, this is very confusing.

This was a very disappointing book.

New Comic Day 01/11/12

It is once again new comic day. This week, I’m going to try to do this post a little bit better than usual. This time, I will actually be checking my order list as I write this so I won’t forget anything important.

The first big release for me this week is, as always, the GL title. Since this is the second week of the month, that title is Green Lantern. According to someone in the GL thread on SomethingAwful, this week we will be seeing the end of the first arc of the new series. It should be interesting to see what happens on Korugar with the the Sinestro Corps.

Batgirl and Batwoman are both also out this week. Batgirl has been quite enjoyable so far. That title is now entering the second arc. At the end of last issue, Barbara’s long-estranged mother showed up at her door. Batwoman is supposed to be ending its first arc this week and I expect the book to look as amazing as ever. The drawing is fantastic, the colors accent that perfectly, and the page layouts are an art in themselves.

A new Star Wars title from Dark Horse also launches this week. It’s being launched in support of the new MMORPG, Star Wars The Old Republic. The series is called Knights of the Old Republic.

The second issue if DC’s The Ray is out this week and I enjoyed the hell out of the last one. It doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The second issue of the current Dark Tower series is out this week from Marvel and a Deadlands one shot should also be on comic retailers’ shelves.

Those are my top books of interest this week. There is also #4 of the Dunwich Horror comic, Suicide Squad, and Mister Terrific. Of course there are plenty more and you should take a look to see what interests you the most.

Decision Time

Even if I were still only reading DC comics, I would probably want to cut a few more of the new 52 from my list than I have. Yesterday I placed my order for next week’s comics but the only title I dropped was Superboy. I was tempted to drop Demon Knights, too, but I’m going to give that one until the end of the first arc to impress me. The last issue was better than the ones that came before.

New Comic Day 12/28/11

It is once again the day when new comics are released. This being the fourth week of the month, I think we can expect All Star Western and The Flash to be out.

All Star Western is now entering its second story arc, which was hinted at in the last issue. The secondary story in that book, about El Diablo, may also be coming to an end.

What I’m looking forward to the most is seeing how Francis Manapul writes the Flash out of the situation that last month’s issue ended with.
